Boyle Heights residents and stakeholders have been divided on the proposal to raze the 70-acre site and build 4,400 apartments and condominiums. Opponents and supporters have strongly expressed their views at multiple community meetings and most recently at City Hall.
Last night, the board voted 9-3 in support of the project after Fifteen Group, the developers behind the $2-billion plan, gave a presentation. One board member abstained from voting on the issue and another recused himself due to possible conflict of interest.
In its presentation, Fifteen Group disclosed the project’s details including the creation of the Boyle Heights Jobs Collaborative, a program that aims to direct 30 percent of construction work to Wyvernwood and Boyle Heights residents.
Before the project can proceed, the Planning Department and the City of Los Angeles requires developers do community vetting and have support from the neighborhood council. However, last night’s vote is treated like a recommendation to the city, it is not the final decision.
The Planning Commission and City Council are expected to hear the proposal in the spring.
