Verónica Alániz is a senior at Ãnimo Ã“scar De La Hoya Charter High School. In her free time, she likes reading, playing soccer, doing gymnastics and going out with her family. She wants to major in a medical field and minor in journalism.
Mitzi Ballesteros is a senior at Ãnimo Ã“scar De La Hoya Charter High School. She enjoys watching comedy movies and horseback riding and is an active secretary of Key Club, a community service club. She hopes to attend Santa Clara University and major in political science.
Brizette Castellanos is a junior at Theodore Roosevelt High School’s School of Communications, New Media and Technology. She hopes to attend the University of Southern California and pursue a career in journalism. Brizette enjoys tweeting as a pastime.
Anthony Dorado is a senior at Ã“scar De La Hoya Ãnimo Charter High School. During his free time, he enjoys reading, running, eating and serving his community. He hopes to become a police officer or a business owner.
Juan Gutiérrez is a junior at Felicita and Gonzalo Méndez Learning Center. He serves as captain of the Jaguars cross country team, plays left wing for the boys’ varsity soccer team and represents the Downtown Soccer team. After high school, he hopes to major in English at UC San Diego and play soccer.
Lesly Juárez is a junior at Roosevelt’s Math, Science & Technology Magnet Academy. She spends her free time reading, studying and exploring the streets of downtown L.A. She aspires to attend a college in California or New York University and work for the L.A. Times.
Jennifer Lam is a senior at Francisco Bravo Medical Magnet High School. She enjoys writing about community and health issues. She has a passion for the sciences, and her favorite hobbies include reading, writing and running. She plans to attend college and major in a field of science and minor in journalism.
Melissa Martínez is a junior in Roosevelt’s School of Law & Government. She enjoys writing about the positive work in a community. She loves reading and playing the violin and the piano.
Yazmín Núñez is a junior in Roosevelt’s School of Law and Government. Yazmín is one of the founders of Boyle Heights Beat and enjoys writing stories about her community. She hopes to attend a UC campus and major in journalism and law.
Emily Ochoa is a senior at Francisco Bravo Medical Magnet High School. During her free time, she enjoys running, drawing, taking photos and experiencing new things. She plans on majoring in psychology in college.
Ericka Oropeza is a senior at Ãnimo Ã“scar De La Hoya Charter High School. She is a delegate to the Youth and Government program. Ericka listens to Korean music, watches Korean dramas and wants to visit Japan. She hopes to attend Georgetown University.
Emily Valdez is a sophomore in Roosevelt’s School of Law and Government. She is secretary of her class and participates in the JROTC club. She hopes to attend a university in New York and major in political science.

Imelda Mercado will be a sophomore at Theodore Roosevelt High School in the fall. She likes to listen to music, hang out with her friends and read. Her goal is to major in astronomy at the University of Cambridge.
Robinson Ramos will be a senior at Felicitas and Gonzalo Méndez Learning Center in the fall. He is a member of the Student Council, enjoys math and participated in the Jaime Escalante summer program. His goal is to become an aerospace engineer.
Sylvester Foley will be a sophomore at Felicitas and Gonzalo Méndez Learning Center in the fall. He likes sports, going out with his friends, reading and writing. He hopes to attend Harvard University and major in medicine.
Yesenia Thomson will be a sophomore at Felicitas and Gonzalo Méndez Learning Center in the fall. She enjoys listening to music, creative writing and socializing. She hopes to major in journalism and minor in music at UC Berkeley.
