Activists took to Mariachi Plaza Tuesday to rally against transgender violence. Protest organizers say 19 transgender and non-gender conforming individuals have been killed in the United States this year, including one in Kansas City, Missouri last weekend, prompting the rally. Members of the TransLatin@ Coalition and Familia: Trans and Queer Liberation Movement, along with other groups participated.
Protester Jennicet Guiterriez was at Tuesday’s rally. She told KTLA, “Because I am transgender, I really fear for my life. I fear about my safety. We are sending a message that we won’t tolerate that kind of violence.”
Demonstrators held another event outside the Beverly Center in March protesting violence against transgendered people. Transgender women of color, especially those who experience high levels of poverty, are more likely be victims of violence and harassment.
